Monkey Genetics: Transgenic Rhesus With Huntington Disease

Scientists at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia, have developed a primate model of Huntington disease. Researchers led by Anthony Chan claim that “a transgenic HD monkey model may open the way to understanding the underlying biology of HD better, and to the development of potential therapies.” The research is published in the May 18 Nature online.

Neural Cell Transplants May Help Those With Parkinson's Disease

Τhe current issue of CELL TRANSPLANTATION (Vol. 17:4) features a number of publications by researchers seeking new ways to treat Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurological disease characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor and slowed physical movements related to insufficient levels of dopamine (DA) in the basal ganglia of the brain, by using primate models to examine the potential therapy role of transplanted cells.

First Evidence Of Native Dendritic Cells In Brain Surprises Scientists

In a finding that has the potential to change the way researchers think about the brain, scientists at Rockefeller University have found dendritic cells where they’ve never been seen before: among this organ’s neurons and connective cells. The immunity-directing dendritic cell had previously been seen in the human nervous system only after brain injury or disease. But the new study shows for the first time that the brain has its own, resident population of dendritic cells that may serve as a line of defense against pathogens that sneak past the blood-brain barrier.

Molecular 'Clock' Could Predict Risk For Developing Breast Cancer

A chemical reaction in genes that control breast cancer provides a molecular clock that could one day help researchers more accurately determine a woman's risk for developing breast cancer and provide a new approach for treatment, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers have found.

New Map Reveals Dynamic Variation in Human Genome

A team of researchers led by Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Evan E. Eichler at the University of Washington has produced the first high-resolution map showing the structural variation that exists in the human genome. With the map, researchers can now begin to see how the underlying structure of one person's genome differs from that of another.
